The second day of the MIX10 conference was as exciting as the first day, if not more. Like the announcement of Microsoft letting developers preview Internet Explorer 9, Microsoft released a lot of important news and updates which are bound to make the company’s users happy. Unfortunately however there are two released details by Microsoft which will not settle well with smartphone application developers and users looking forward to the operating system of Windows Phone 7 series.
1. Windows Phone 7 series will not support actual multitasking. A push notification namely MNS (Microsoft Notification Service) will be supported by the phones. MNS does not differ a lot from the push notification system the iPhone has. Microsoft’s justification for not supporting multitasking is that multiple applications running simultaneously will drain the phone’s battery undesirably fast. But the operating system Windows Mobile 6.x supports multitasking. Therefore not including multitasking in Windows Phone 7 series will be a clear step in the backwards direction.
2. Clipboard operations will not be supported on Windows Phone 7 Series (at least not initially). This means no copy-paste abilities. This move seems strange especially when history has such a lesson for Microsoft: iPhone did not have copy-paste initially and faced extreme criticism for it. Microsoft repeating iPhone’s blunder makes no sense at all. The future updates might or might not include copy-pasting, but the initial OS release will definitely not include copy-pasting abilities.
These two pieces of news will certainly be a disappointment for power-cellphone users. Let us just hope that the final day of the conference will bring only good news for the web and mobile arena.
