Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sales hit $1bn

And the award for “It was only a matter of time” news of the day goes to… Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, for hitting the $1 billion (£625 million) revenue mark. We’re surprised it’s taken this long, frankly.

Released in November last year, CoD’s 6th outing shot up the charts like a particularly controversial rat up a gaming chart drainpipe, pulling in $550 million within 5 days. Unsurprisingly, the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA) has ranked it as the best-selling game of 2009, saying that the game’s success is “undoubtedly one of the leading entertainment stories of the year and firmly established videogames as one of the leading forms of entertainment in the UK.”

The immediate sales success, whilst slowing, hasn’t stopped – now tipping it into the $1 billion bracket in terms of overall revenue – a club shared by precious few entertainment franchises, and even fewer gaming ones.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfar 2’s publisher Activision must be a little bit pleased with the game’s runaway success, even despite the controversy, since it now owns three $1 billion franchises: CoD, Guitar Hero and World of Warcraft.
