Apple iOS 4.2 Due on Friday?

iOS 4.2 coming soonThere is a good chance that we could see iOS 4.2 this Friday!  Apple has just put up a new “coming soon” page for the iOS 4.2 iPad Update.  The new page outlines a few of 100+ new features that iOS 4.2 will bring to the iPad.  Just to name of a few of the big features the iPad will see are multitasking, AirPlay, AirPrint, and Game Center for iPad.  But nowhere on the page does Apple give a release date, just a “coming soon” tag.

We do have a big rumor from a source inside AT&T.  Apparently that inside source told MacStories that that Apple is planning to release iOS 4.2, on Friday November 12th at 10 AM PST.  We all know Apple recently released iOS 4.2 GM to developers, obviously the next step is a public release.

The release of iOS 4.2 depends a great deal on the release of iTunes 10.1 and Mac OS X 10.6.5, which according to the same source, OS X 10.6.5 has just passed certification stage this morning.  While iTunes 10.1 has been ready to roll for a few weeks now.  Those two updates are required for the functionality of AirPlay and AirPrint on the iPad.

MacStories source also explained to them about the AT&T procedure for iPhone updates. AT&T’s protocol states that staff must thoroughly test all Apple devices with the latest update, before it can be pushed out to the public.  With the recent iOS 4.2 tests, AT&T testers found a bug inside the firmware which did not display Japanese characters properly on the iPhone.  Apple has since fixed the issue with the release of iOS 4.2 GM.

If you put all this together, it could mean a nice end of the week for iPad and iPhone owners.  Don’t forget that iOS 4.2 update is also coming for the iPhone and iPod Touch.  Apple is focusing the update on the iPad, but it’s going to be released for all iDevices.

Stay tuned to BlogsDNA for any more iOS 4.2 updates.
