Stephen McGill, who handles Microsoft Xbox in the UK, said that Blu-ray is going to be passed as a format and digital downloads and streaming is the future.
According to him, choosing DVD formats over Blu-ray is what has kept the Xbox 360 price competitive. He also said that Xbox already offers full HD 1080p Blu-ray quality streaming with no delays and no downloads required.
Techies note that Blu-ray is one of the things that the Sony PlayStation has an advantage over Xbox.
McGill said: "I think people now recognise what a smart decision it was to keep the pricing low, and actually Blu-ray is going to be passed by as a format. People have moved through from DVDs to digital downloads and digital streaming, so we offer full HD 1080p Blu-ray quality streaming instantly, no download, no delay. So, who needs Blu-ray?"
However, one of the issues with full HD streaming is the broadband speeds and data limits – how many households can fully process HD streaming?
With Xbox not looking to Blu-ray either, this follows Steve Jobs dismissal of Blu-ray in favour of internet downloads.
