Facebook has become the most visited website in the US, finally overtaking Google.com this week, according to internet metrics firm Hitwise.
The social network edged past the 7.03 pe rcent of total page views enjoyed by Google in the US. This is the first time the search engine lost its reign over the internet since 2007.

These figures however only factor in hits on the Google.com address, and excludes those on international sites, Gmail, YouTube, Maps and other services.
This shift marks a change in the way people browse the web. Social networks are becoming a more powerful starting point in web navigation. Even Google is paying attention having launched its own experimental network Buzz earlier this year.
