Sony PS3 owners locked out of PlayStation Network

Sony PS3 owners have been locked out of the PlayStation Network since last night, amidst reports that game functionality has also been severely compromised.

Sony has admitted that there is a problem that is being looked into, and that the issue only affects ‘fat’ units, not the newer ‘slim’ (120/250 GB models).

Owners of the larger console will be unable to connect to the Sony PlayStation Network, receiving an 8001050F error as soon as the console attempts to connect. The bug also resets the system date to 1st January 2000, which removes activation privileges for all paid-for content on the PS3 hard drive.

The current recommendation is not to attempt to connect to the PlayStation Network with a ‘fat’ Sony PS3 until the issue is resolved.

More as we get it…
