Have you ever wonder why they don’t name their Operating System to Google OS ? Instead they name it Google Chrome OS, obviously it has a lot to do with the Chrome Browser they have released little over a year ago. As of today, the rumor from TechCrunch was practically true, Google has released the development Source Code for Chrome OS. By which means there are a long road ahead for the final product to be released. As of for now they only have a platform that looks really similar with the Chrome Browser. But there is one thing very interesting with this OS, is that all the data that user created will be stored in the cloud ! Yes everything, even a small new text file, it will be stored in the Google’s Clod, which you can access it in your Google Doc.
Of course Google is targeting the HOT Netbook market, from one of the demon today you can see that the boot time on a netbook is around 7 seconds. Obviously the speed is one of the spotlight. They have promised the OS will run on either x86 or ARM processors, which means even the processors inside your iPhone will work with this OS.
So here is the catch
Google has be in the Browser market for over a year, and their Chrome is currently have the market share little over 5%. Not saying that their browser sucks, they’ve done a fine job with Chrome, but people have build habits over time, and not easily convinced to make changes. With their new Chrome OS, I won’t expect this will be a huge impact or thread to the Microsoft Windows Operating System. Simply there are too many limitations with this OS, you can’t run any addition applications except web apps, basically this is just a huge web browser. As of today they have promised that the UI will be different for sure, and still lots more work is needed be done for the final release. Guess by the time when the OS officially came up it will be a whole different story.
If you are really interested in the new Chrome OS, here is an 1 hr video from today’s Announcement, and I’m sure it will be worth for the time.
