iPhone App Review: Gangster Rocco

I reviewed the app called Gangster Rocco. I had a toy as a “youngster” that was a driving game. Essentially this toy that I had, lit up a scrolling cityscape and you used the steering wheel to drive a car past the same 5 buildings for hours. What an awesomely simple gold nugget of memory from my youth. Gangster Rocco reminded me of that toy that was probably sold for 25 cents in a yard sale.

This is a game with a delightfully simple concept and a unbelievably hard level of game play. I loved it but I will be as objective as possible and review the pros and cons like normal.

Lets start with what was good about Gangster Rocco. First of all, if you think that you can get to level 6 on easy without loosing at least 1 life you are crazy. In fact, if you do, I will give you 100 cool points. “What’s a cool point?” you ask. Absolutely nothing! Just something to make you feel good about yourself. Don’t spend them all in one place. Ok, back to the review. This is not a game that you can master in a matter of a few minutes. Although the controls are easy to use and get used to, you will work on your technique for some time to come, just to master this game.

Another cool feature about this game is the fact that you don’t have to spend a lot of time to get to the harder parts. Right from the start you are being run down by obstacles that will cause you to lose life fast. By now you may have caught on to the fact that I like to be challenged by games that I play. That’s why this game is so appealing. Although there is a level of graphic complexity missing, Gangster Rocco makes up for it with the amount of hand eye coordination required to play.

Now, on to the cons to Gangster Rocco. Game play is a little to choppy for me.  It is not a free flowing game, but rather the objects jump from one position to another throughout the levels. This next con is begging for the exact opposite of simple. I wanted desperately to be able to shoot a cat. No I’m not a sicko but it would have been nice to pick up a power up that would allow Rocco to shoot his gun for a short period of time. Another con that would have been nice to see is a change in scenery in different levels.

To sum up what I thought about this game, I would have to say that this app is a good buy. I now know what I will be doing while I am waiting at the dentist office for my turn with the doc. Just a hint, I won’t be looking at a two year old version of sports illustrated. I’ll be playing Gangster Rocco!

Pros-
– Simple game concept
– Entertaining game play
– Cheap buy

Cons-
– Jumpy graphics
– No variety in scenery from level to level

I give this game an 8/10 because it is nice to see a simple game that is this challenging
